The lemonade diet is also called master cleanse for its cleansing effect on the body. The entire source of energy and nutrients in the lemonade diet comes from lemonade. It is made from a mixture of fresh lemon juice, purified water, maple syrup, and cayenne pepper.

It is a short-term diet that is similar to other types of juice diets in many ways. The diet period lasts from 10 to 40 days, depending on your need. In addition, each morning, you drink a salt-water flush, and each evening you have to drink a laxative tea. Only pure water and peppermint tea are the beverages allowed during a lemonade diet. Pure water is non-carbonated non-fluorinated water.

Apart from a diet, the lemonade diet is also considered a detoxification and fasting program. When it was originally developed over a half century ago, its purpose was to rid the body of toxins and internal wastes that occur because of improper diet and lack of exercise. However, it is now promoted as a quick weight loss plan as well.

The lemonade diet consists of nothing more than a lemon juice intake through out the day in regular intervals. A single serving of the lemonade juice consists of two tablespoons fresh lemon juice, two tablespoons of organic maple syrup, 1/10 teaspoon of cayenne pepper, and ten ounces of filtered water.

No solid foods or supplements are allowed to be eaten during the lemonade diet. You can only take lemonade diet prescribed fluids, which help you stay hydrated. According to the plan, in one day, you can drink six or more servings of lemonade juice. This helps you to reduce weight up to 20 pounds, look younger, ease chronic pain as the lemonade cleanses your body completely and boosts your energy level within 10 days.

Neglecting the dark side of the dieting people are willing to go extremes like lemonade diet to lose weight quickly. Of course, weight loss is natural when you stop eating and drink very few calories. However, this kind of diet can also be dangerous to your health. Nutritionists point out that the lemonade diet is deficient in all the essential nutrients like calories, vitamins, minerals, protein, carbohydrates, fiber, and fat.

After following the lemonade diet for one-half to two weeks, dieters can slowly ease back into solid food, starting with foods like vegetable soup, followed by fruits and vegetables. It is definite that you loose weight while on lemonade diet because fast creates serious calorie deficit. However, it does not reduce fat, only the muscles and water weight.

One thing to be kept in mind is that there is no medical evidence that fasting or "cleansing" is what removes body toxins. Dietitians, nutritionists, and doctors point out that the liver already detoxifies the body. They also raise doubt about lemonade diet claims of benefits, since it consists only of a low-calorie beverage that may not give enough energy for normal body functions. Actually, there is nothing magical about these kinds of plans, as it is not reliable for long term and ultimately it will be responsible for an unhealthy relationship with food.

Still, if you want to choose to follow this plan, be sure to only do it for a few days and consult your doctor or registered dietitian beforehand.
