If you are currently underemployed or totally unemployed, you might wonder how anyone could benefit in such awful times. If you have never had a job, you may feel that this is the absolute worst time to enter the job market. And you have some reasons to feel that way IF you are just looking at today's opportunities. But during these hard times in the past, many people decided just to ride it out rather than look for or take any old job. They made a short-term sacrifice for a long-term gain. Maybe they didn't have to worry too much about paying for their education. What if you had the same opportunity? Actually, now you do! State and federal agencies are doing all they can to encourage workers to use this time to get the training they need. Future work will not be done by people with yesterday's skills. To get a work force trained and ready, all kinds of programs are being made available now. Pell Grant money - the workhorse of low-income students - has been increased. The limit per year has been raised, to a maximum of $5,500 this year. That should cover most or all of your tuition costs at two-year and vocational schools. Check with the ones near you and see just how far that one source, Pell Grants, will go to help you. Add to that, the benefit you will get from the increased tax credit, $2,500, and any programs and help that your individual state may offer and suddenly, things look much better. Suddenly, you can see opportunities that you may have thought were only available to those much better off financially. The programs won't last forever, the new work force will be trained and employed and the overall picture for the nation's economy will be much brighter. The decisions you make for yourself right now will determine where you will be in that picture.
