President Obama has an education initiative to get moms back in school. After reviewing the statistics and seeing that the majority of single parent families are living below the poverty level, education is taking a priority! You are much less likely to be unemployed if you have a degree or certification.
In the richest nation on the planet, it is shocking that we have so many single parent families struggling! These single parents are raising children that will be this country's future! If these children don't value education the future could be very dim! It's up to the parents to set the example! Remember we teach by DOING not just by TELLING. Single parents can show their children how important education is simply by completing their own degree or certification.
Obama has increased the value of the Pell Grant. This particular grant is needs based, which simply put means that it is for those that are financially struggling. If you are a parent that is one of millions in the low income category, this grant is for you! If you don't qualify for the low income status under the government guidelines, no need to worry! There are plenty of other grants and scholarships out there that you could qualify for! You don't have to resort to student loans to finish your education.
Beware! There are more and more websites and scammers out there that claim they can get you a government grant under the Obama initiative. Don't fall for it! No one can get you government money, except the government! As long as you keep that in mind, you won't fall victim to these criminals regardless of how good they make it all look! (Remember the old saying, if it's too good to be true, it probably is!)
Having said that, you should apply for every legitimate grant and scholarship you can find! Including the Pell Grant!
With the advent of technology, it is now possible to go to school online. You can actually earn a degree or certification from the comfort of your living room. This means being able to take classes and do the work on your schedule. Maybe you can make time early in the morning, or after the kids are in bed. Online education makes it easy to get that education. Many scholarships and grants now cover online education, so really, there are no more excuses!
The benefits of a grant or scholarship are innumerable. The biggest of which is that you do not have to pay them back, today tomorrow or ever! They are not like student loans that require you pay back interest as well as the balance. You can start your new career without the added burden of a huge loan hanging over your shoulder.
Many scholarships and grants also allow you to use part of the money for family expenses. Do your homework and find out the specifics for each scholarship or grant that interests you. You may find that you qualify for many more than you thought and it is perfectly acceptable to apply for as many as you need!
