The red ring of death has constantly been infecting and threatening Xbox 360's. If You are reading this article, you are most likely among the unfortunate few with a broken console. Personally, I would refrain from sending my console away to some random strangers for repair. Why? Because not only can this be very costly (up to $100 or more), but it also can take weeks, or even months for you to get your gaming system back. If you fix it yourself, you can be playing your games within an hour with little or no charge.
Before we get to the actual fixing part, lets take a look at what not to do:
Do not attempt to use a temporary method of fixing it, these can in fact damage your console. An example of this would be the “towel trick” which involves overheating your Xbox so that you can play it for one or two hours.
Do not attempt to take apart your console and fix the problem alone, with no guidance or instruction. Many people have tried this and have ended up losing/breaking parts, not finding the problem, and/or making the problem worse.
Do not try fiddling with it in any way that could remove your warranty or damage the console.
Now that we know what not to do, lets fix the gaming system. The first step is to figure out what problem you are experiencing so we can then identify the solution.
The simplest problems are 2,3, or 4 red lights, because they generally all have one error incorporated with them. Four red lights is the simplest, this means you are experiencing problems with the AV cables. This should be a simple fix, unless its an internal problem and your console cannot detect the AV cables even when all settings are correct. Three red lights is the most common, associated with the E74 error. This is a general hardware error, I will explain how to fix this later in the article. Two red lights means your console has overheating problems, I will also explain this later in the article.
If you have just one red light, you could have many problems. If you have the E74, it is probably similar to three red lights. I have not included all other possible errors due to the fact that I already have them listed in another article called 1 Red Ring of Death Explained.
