Why is it that the rich get richer while the poor get more poor? How is it that it is ok to give hundreds of billions of dollars to banks so they can pad their bottom lines while Americans are losing jobs at alarming rates? We are almost at 10% unemployment and this is unacceptable.
As I wrote in the first chapter of the book MESSED UP!!, our government has given out almost 1 trillion dollars to banks and insurance companies to keep their bottom lines in the black. This money was given to them with the intention of the banks lending out again to stimulate the economy. Once the banks actually recieved this money however all they did was hoard it so they wouldn't lose money and their stock holders would not have to worry about losing more money. What needed to be done is give the money back to the people that put it into the treasury in the first place.
Had our government given a grant to pay 2 years of mortgage payments to all the people that actually needed help we would have spent billions of dollars less!! Also the banks would have still gotten their money!! That is the beauty of this. The mortgage companies would have gotten all the money owed to them by the people. The housing industry would have been saved, the people would have been able to stay in their homes, and during that 2 year span they could have paid off a lot of bills (banks getting more money from credit card payments and other loan payments) and even saved some money for the future. Could you imagine not having 2 years of mortgage payments? What would you do with the money? Payoff credit cards? Buy things you need for your home? Save it for the future? The list can go on and on. My point is this...Had the government actually helped the people that needed it we have been out of this recession and the hit would have been minimal to the whole country.
