When I diagnose what the issue is, it's virtually always either they don't know their multiplication tables or, more often, they do not know how to work with fragments.
I teach the upper grades in my school, yet I continue to see youngsters who do not also have basic algebra talents prepared.
As a parent, I am extremely mindful of what my own youngsters are learning in school. For the most part, I've been pleased with their progress, but as they rise in grade level, I'm starting to see more emphasis on a loose experience of the concepts and less focus on skills--particularly talents with arithmetic of fragments.
The main problem with what I see with my students and my own youngsters is that kids are taught'concepts' and are not taught skills--unless they're fortunate enough to have a teacher who knows better.
Sadly, almost all of their future maths education relies on having the ability to do fractional arithmetic. The majority of even beginning algebra relies on having the ability to do 2 things--one, doing multiplication quickly and accurately in your head, two, knowing how to add, take away, multiply, and divide fragments.
If this doesn't make any sense to you, do not fret about it. Just trust me, if you do not know your multiplication tables, you can't factor.
The same is true for mastery of working with fragments.
So, generally, youngsters who don't learn their multiplication tables and arithmetic with fragments usually don't perform nicely in mathematics. So, these same kids customarily do not do well with science, either.
In other words, they're locked out of most of the growth that our economy is going to experience in the future. According to the government, 8 out of ten jobs in the following twenty years are going to be PC related. If you need your kid to gain access to the major portion of jobs in the future, your kid must master maths. It's that simple.
Teachers are really doing their best to teach kids. It is a little like the state of communications in our country before the deregulation of the phonephone companies. Before deregulation, one and only one advancement--the touch tone phonephone.
What dedicated teachers and parents need to do is to supplement public college instruction with secrets that work, that have always worked, to get kids to actually master the elemental skills of elementary maths.
