In Spain, an NIE number is needed by foreigners for fiscal and legal purposes. This is their Foreign Identification Number or Número de Identificación de Extranjero. It is needed for the foreigners to be able to buy and sell properties, be employed, buy vehicles, apply for loans, inheritance of assets, apply for a business permit, insure a property, pay the taxes, and sign into their national Social Security Health plan in Spain. The question is how to apply for a Spanish NIE number? There are two ways in getting an NIE number; one is from the Spanish Consulate in your country or from a police station in Spain.

If you are going to get an NIE number from the Spanish Consulate, make sure that you already have an application form in your hands. You may ask someone from Spain to send one to you or you can download it from the Internet. You also need to bring all the requirements needed for your application. The requirements are two passport size photos, in plain background and without eyeglasses and earrings, a photocopy of your passport, an original copy and a photocopy of the document which explains your reason for applying for an NIE number, a self-addressed envelope and an envelope big enough to fit all the requirements above and addressed to the central police headquarters in Madrid. The address is Comisaría General de Extranjería y Documentación, Dirección General de Policia, C/ General Pardiñas, 90, 28006 Madrid, Spain.

You will fill out the application form in front of a consulate employee. Once you are done, your signature will have an official stamp of validation. After that, you will give all your requirements along with the required amount for payment. The consulate will be the one to send your application to Madrid and then you will just wait for you NIE. This is more expensive than getting your NIE in Spain.

If you want to get your NIE number in Spain all you have to do is prepare your passport with a photocopy, the address you are using while in Spain - a friend's address for example - and a written certification of your reason why you want to apply for an NIE number. When you apply in Spain, you must go to any of their police station and go to the Foreigners Department or Departmento de Extranjeros. Ask for an application form. Once you have filled it out, have it photocopied and submit it along with the requirements above. A photocopy of the application form which is already stamped will be returned to you. Ask them when you should go back for your NIE number. The number of days usually varies but it can take up to six weeks. Notification is not sent once your NIE number has arrived so you must follow-up after two weeks of filing your application.

In claiming you NIE number, you must present your passport and the stamped photocopy of your application form. An NIE document is an A4 sized document with an official stamp. It has your name, address, birth date and NIE number. Always remember to keep your original NIE copy in a safe place and prepare photocopies to submit for your transactions.
