We all love to spend time with our dogs, so why not take them with us on a 'dog holiday'? The more responsible of us are loathe to leave our best friends in the care of another for any extended period of time. To that end, the notion of a 'dog holiday' - a vacation specifically designed to accommodate your favorite canine companion - has become popular in recent years.

It makes sense, right? When we organize pet-friendly rentals, we don't have to be concerned about how they're doing back home without us -- are they unhappy, are they TOO happy, will they be safe and well fed, etc. Also, the cost of having them looked after is often comparable or greater than the cost of dog holiday accommodations.

It might sound like a no-brainer, but you need to make sure your pet won't be forgotten on your journey. You have a routine that includes them at home, but sometimes the pleasures or vigors of the road can be distracting. Before you leave, make a checklist of everything you normally do for your dog, and bring it with you to remember all of those same services on the road.

What do you need to buy before you leave? Are you going somewhere that will provide the elements you might forget? Most pet-friendly places will ask you to bring your own doggie bed, and of course you'll need food and water (and bowls for each) at the minimum.

It's not unusual to be asked to sign a contract ensuring that you will replace anything damaged by your pet. Don't be insulted, it's a necessary precaution on the part of the rental owner. Remember that the more poised and in control of your pet you are, the more likely the establishment is to continue accepting pets in the future.

Of course, you should also bring proof of your pet's vaccinations, worming, and other basic medical expectations that the rental could have for your pooch. Any company that doesn’t insist on seeing them could be endangering your dog by allowing other untreated animals near your best friend!

Remember, if you do find a place where your puppy is welcome on holiday, you have an opportunity to share an excellent vacation with them! Your buddy will appreciate it, and so will the rental providers.
