I think when people tell you that you "should network" it adds a mandatory and stressful component to it. It's as if it's a "must do" and a "must do well". I know that when I began my coaching business almost 4 years ago, I heard how vital it was for the success of my business to network, network, and network. Well, I didn't. And I didn't because I didn't know how to find the best places to go and I didn't know what to do when I got there. And, oh yeah, I was scared to death!

So as is typically my way, I began researching and reading about what this thing called networking is. And since it was so vital, my goodness, I just HAD to master it!

Let's begin with why networking is even important to do, i.e., what's the benefit. It expands your circle of friends, colleagues, mentors, sponsors and experts who can teach you a "new" thing or two. You likely have a great group of people with whom you work and play. You will gain access to a wider range of topics to discuss and share when exposed to new people, concepts and ideas. Networking is an ideal contained and controlled environment to do just that. You can attend only those events which interest you. And this applies whether you are job hunting, business building or just plain want to learn new stuff.

How can you make it fun? Easy. Forget all the implied pressure when someone tells you that you MUST network. That just starts the stress of what to say, what's my elevator pitch, do I have business cards, how will I dress, who would want to talk to me, etc.

Instead, let me share with you the following set of fool proof tips to make networking a fun experience!

Tip #1 - Start looking for events that match a fun hobby or interest that you have. You can use meetup.com to help you find local meetings.

Tip #2 - Decide what you want to leave with as a result of the meeting, BEFORE you go. Do you just want to have fun, meet some new people, and learn one "new" thing? That's what you'll focus on.

Tip #3 - Go to the event with the intention of learning more about the people you meet. Set yourself in "listen mode" only. Make a game of it! How many people can you learn about in the few hours that you're with them. People love to talk about themselves and what they're doing. So let them, while you relax and enjoy the experience.

Bonus Tip - Remember with a few exceptions, everyone there is just as nervous about walking into a room full of new people too. And those who are "master" networkers will search out the "newbie's" to help them feel comfortable. They remember where they started!

Next Steps: Sign up at meetup.com and just look around at the many different and unique meetings going on in your area. Try to find just one to get started and make it a fun one. Then go!

Mastering anything takes time and patience. So the first step is to get out there and attend some events. Some are free, some include a meal and others are just a light snack and beverage. You'll have to decide what your pocket and tummy can handle for a 2-3 hour investment.

Remember, it's all easier if you make it fun!

Hope to see you out there!
