Natural disasters can be an emergency. They can cause major disruptions in the lives of many people. Any ordinary person, who is not prepared for them, may be rendered useless, hopeless and worse, gravely hurt in the situation.

During these times, your only refuge may be your homes. This is your first line of defense when it comes to catastrophes. No matter what happens, whether you are at work or in any public place, you would always want to get home in times of these disasters.

That is why it makes sense to prepare your homes for natural disasters. Any home that lies in the path of these disasters should do what it takes to strengthen their abode. This will keep you and your family safe and secure, even if Mother Nature is at wrath.

Preparing your homes for natural disaster is easy to do. Take these tips and surely, it will do good to you.

Hurricanes

This natural disaster is said to be contiguous in its occurrence. It is mostly known to hit the southeast coast of the country. According to statistics there are over 45 million people residing along hurricane-prone coastline. If you live within this area, the best thing you can do are the following:

- Build permanent shutters to protect your windows and your glass doors. If you do not have one, find alternatives to protect them like using plywood panels.
- Use heavy-duty deadbolts, replace creaking hinges and use solid doorframes to make your doors less susceptible to strong wind damage.
- Fasten gable roof with the use of sheathing and add truss bracing. You can also try installing hurricane straps to hold the roof in case of strong winds.

Tornado

United states have tornado alley. These are places frequently hit by tornadoes and they are said to be found in the Central part of the country. If you belong in these areas, here are some tips to prepare your homes for tornadoes:

- Make sure your homes meet the building codes for tornado prone areas. The truth is no home could really withstand the force of tornados. However, if homes are properly constructed meeting the standards, it can be left standing if the tornado just passes by it.
- Develop an emergency plan on where to go if your home is in the path of tornado. Create emergency shelters or ensure your basement is sturdy, so it can protect the whole family against the disaster.
- Keep first-aid kits and other disaster supplies in your shelter. Make sure you have the basic, water, food and clothing.

Earthquake

Major earthquakes have attacked United States since the 1500s. The latest earthquake happened in the greater Los Angeles Area, California with a magnitude of 5.5. Although no one really got hurt with the incident but studies show that a 7.8 magnitude could cause a death of 1,800 people. Therefore, if you want to be protected from injury or harm, here's what you can do:

- Make sure your home is sturdy and has properly built foundations. Some homes are designed to withstand tremors caused by earthquakes but only in certain magnitude. Follow seismic building standards.
- Keep wires and pipes in good condition. Any wire hanging should be put back in place. Any pipes with leaking should be fixed.
- Any loose fixtures should be anchored to the wall,
- Always be equipped with a disaster kit.
- Store flammables properly or keep them locked in cabinets.
