By the time you finish reading this you will be closer to uncovering the truth of how the destruction of collagen affects your skin. You may say, "But, I use moisturizers everyday."

This is fine however, moisturizers will not help the lines that keep appearing on your face. These lines are caused by the loss of collagen and elastin.

You may have heard these terms but do you know what role they play in the health of your skin? There are products touting such ridiculous statements as 'Our product forms collagen for younger looking skin' or 'Product X will replenish elastin to make your skin appear years younger'.

The truth is neither one of these products will work. Why? Because collagen and elastin work together to support the skin. One will not work without the other.

Understanding why and how the destruction of collagen affects your skin will help you to understand what products will help and what ones are a waste of your time and money. First of all, the aging process is responsible for the loss of collagen and elastin naturally.

There are other factors that can increase the look of aging skin. These will include:

* sun damage

* smoking

* pollution

* genetic predisposition

* hormone depletions

* decreased fat content

All of these among other reasons can cause your skin to look older. Inevitably you will see facial products - creams, lotions, masks - that contain collagen. This is another false hope that cosmetic and skin care companies promote.

The collagen in these types of products are going to do nothing more than moisturize the skin. Collagen cannot be absorbed by the skin.

Adding a single ingredient to the skin will not help either. The skin goes through many changes due to our surroundings and the genetic make-up of each individual.

When you read the next advertisement or hear the next commercial for that brand new skin product just out on the market, find out what ingredients it contains. Educating yourself and knowing the facts such as, there is no product that forms collagen or reverses the destruction of collagen, this will keep you from wasting your money on these products.

The use of artificial chemicals will not bring back youthful, line free skin either. There are many chemicals used in products promoting the repair of collagen destruction and the return of healthy skin that can do exactly the opposite of what they advertise and more.

This includes chemicals like parabens, triclosans, artificial fragrances and liquid paraffin, which can actually be harmful to your health. They can cause allergic reactions as well as many other adverse health conditions.

Anemia, renal failure and stroke are just a few of the health problems they may trigger. The bad part is these chemicals and others just like them are often used in products for skin care regularly.

Do not be fooled into thinking one product is going to completely undo the destruction of collagen that has occurred to this point. This is like saying one pill will change you back to the age of 18. It is not going to happen.

Find the natural products that are good for your skin. Now it's time to start putting these tips to work and getting your skin in the healthiest condition possible.
