In real life, the normal strategy is run the ball. In Madden, its not nearly as important, but being able to pound the football will make sure the defense cant zero in on your throwing game. Taking advantage of when the D is in alignments that dont work towards locking down the running game is big to keeping the defense off kilter and being a great offense. There are a few strategies to guarantee your running success in Madden 2010.
Be cognizant your matchups. Be aware which of your o-linemen are above average and not, and know what defensive players are great and not. This should give you a concept where you should be running the rock, and where you should not. This doesnt mean run ALL the time to these sides, as the D will be knowledgable, but it should give you a starting point for where you run theories should be.
Count the men in the box. Notice any off-kilter changes you defense utilizes. If they split out a 3rd linebacker directly over the wide receiver, they probably have a letdown where that linebacker vacated. If their safeties are too deep and you have a excellent line and a fullback, you should be able to run the ball effectively. On the line, if theyre flooding the defensive set with their safeties, be worried and play action and chuck the rock to get them out of this defense.
Dont run draws/counters. These plays generally do not work in Madden and still do not. They each will be effective every so often, but their randomness is not something you want to rely on in a tough game of Madden. Stick the more standard move-ahead runs, HB dives, and Off-Tackles that will frequently give you big gains.
Have a good running back! Using a excellent running back like Adrian Peterson or Darren Sproles can make up for bad choices and help you get out of tackles where zero was available. Use your hit stick every time to break tackles, but be careful, as trying to do this too often will leave you open to fumbles.
