Figures released by the Motor Insurers Bureau (MIB) have shown that as many as one in ten young drivers do not realise that they need to be insured to drive on the roads by law.
The MIB believe that up to 900,000 motorists aged less than 30 years of age are driving without the necessary cover. Two-thirds of these are aged between 21 and 29 years old, a figure that represents one-third of all uninsured drivers on the roads. The most likely uninsured driver is male and aged between 17 and 29 years old according to a recent report.
A campaign called ‘Stay Insured’ has been launched by the Motor Insurers Bureau in a bid to persuade drivers to renew their insurance policy if they were considering not doing so. The MIB are highlighting the serious financial consequences and penalties that none insured drivers could face if they are caught.
A startling 500 uninsured vehicles are seized each day, with 232,000 drivers being caught without
car insurance every year.
The Motor Insurers Bureau has raised their fears that the recession may lead to an increased number of people allowing their car insurance policies to run out in an attempt to save money during the tough economic climate. As many as three out of four motorists are looking at ways to reduce their car insurance costs.
The Motor Insurers Bureau chief executive said, “In these times of economic uncertainty, it is no surprise that people are looking to cut back on spending wherever possible. However, this is no excuse to commit a criminal offence. There are ways in which they can save on costs and stay adequately insured, such as shopping around for quotes, opting for pay-as-you-drive cover or taking advanced driving lessons.”
The Motor Insurers Bureau has warned that people could get themselves into a worse financial situation if they are caught without insurance, trying to save money. A spokesperson said, “It is important that drivers match their insurance to their lifestyles and pick the most appropriate cover for themselves, whilst also remembering that cheapest policy might not always be the best one for them.”
Drivers who are caught without the correct insurance could face a fixed penalty fine, penalty points on their licence or having their cars apprehended with a fee to pay to for its release.
