There are numerous resources to assist students with paying for a college education. When applying to colleges, you should also set time aside to research the available funding options. There are loans, grants and scholarships available, all of which will make the finance portion of college a little easier, however, the all vary in different ways.
Loans have to be paid back in a certain time frame after graduation, and if you quit or some instances fall below the requirements in grade and/or amount of classes registered for. The type of loan varies as well. There are Stafford loans that are also broke down into different categories, it is important that you discuss your loan options with your school financial aid office to determine which is best for you. Another option is some banks will do a student loan, however the pay back time frame may vary so its best to discuss this option with your bank.
Scholarships are funds provided to help with educational needs. Scholarships vary in many ways. Obama has set up a program called Scholarships for Mothers, that is basically for mothers or women entering or reentering college. There are scholarships that are sometimes awarded for sports, sciences, arts, and endless other specifics. Scholarships are not paid back and are sometimes issued the form of an award. Scholarships are available for pretty much anything of interest to someone, if you think of it, there is probably a scholarship available for it. Scholarships are sometimes not "advertised" and you will have to do research to find them, however, many times they are small awards and do not have a tremendous amount of applicants, which improves your odds.
Grants also do not have to be paid back. Grants are provided by the government and there are certain restrictions that apply. Generally the lower the income you have the greater odds of qualifying for a grant.
Regardless of how you decide to fund your education, make sure to discuss options with your schools financial aid office. You can also find information regarding funding possibilities on the FAFSA website.
