Ask many owners why they take their dog to obedience lessons and they will tell you that they have problems with their dog barking. Well, before you can learn how to stop a dog from barking you need to understand a few facts as to why they bark and then training should become simpler.

Dogs bark for several reasons such as

boredom (I'm bored come and play)

hunger (It's got to be time for my supper now)

alert (someone or something has just passed the window)

to be let out (I'm desperate for a pee, can't cross my legs any longer)

heard another dog (I'm just answering my mate next door)

Now what may surprise you is that to learn how stop a dog from barking you actually need to "teach him to bark". That's right! You need to teach your dog to bark to a simple command such as "speak" and that way, once you can get him to respond to that simple command, you will find that the random barking for no reason at all, starts to happen less frequently.

You will start to call the shots by actually encouraging him to "speak" when it is appropriate and rewarding him for his behavior followed closely by being in the position of telling him to "quiet" when his barking is unwanted and unacceptable behavior.
