For many people taking a credit card abroad when they head off on their travels is a natural choice because of the convenience and ease that credit cards can offer.

However, many people are nervous about taking or using their credit cards whilst overseas because of risks such as spiralling fees and costs, which can quickly bump up the card balance and the risk of becoming a victim of credit card fraud.

However, if you are planning to head overseas and you want to take your credit card along with you then there may be some valuable advice and assistance available to you from industry officials offering information on using your card safely and wisely whilst abroad. The advice comes in the form of a recently released guide for those planning to use their credit cards abroad, and the advice could help both business and leisure travellers.

The guide, which is called Using Your Card Overseas, was put together by the payment clearance agency, APACS, and the travel association, ABTA. The guide is packed with tips and hints designed to help those that want to use their plastic cards abroad, and could help consumers to avoid costly and stressful mistakes.

An official from APACS said: 'Using your debit or credit card is a convenient and safe way to pay when you're overseas. However, everyone should be aware that there may be fees or costs connected with using your card in a foreign cash machine or shop. Additionally, card criminals often look to catch us with our defences down when we are on holiday, so we need to take some simple, sensible precautions to help minimise the chances of becoming a victim of fraud.'

She also said: 'The Using Your Card Overseas guide provides useful advice when it comes to using your card abroad, and can help ensure that you're not caught out by any surprising charges and that your trip overseas is free from fraud.'

Travellers that are heading abroad and planning to use their credit cards abroad could benefit hugely from the information that is inluded in this guide, and given that last year saw plastic cards being used ten times per second by Brits whilst abroad the advice on the guide could save travellers a lot of money and hassle.

By comparing the best credit card deals for use abroad you can also look to compare travel reward credit cards as well and earn some free flights for your safer spending.
