Since the concept of Attraction Marketing became popular through the writings of Mike Dillard, Ann Sieg and others, every second Internet marketer seems to be jumping on the Im attractive bandwagon. And in many cases it doesnt really work. This reminds me of a recent television series.
I am not very fond of TV, since I see it as an 'electronic income reducer'. However, my spouse persuaded me to have a look at the reality program True Beauty, purely for its entertainment value. This is the show in which a group of individuals compete for the title of being the most attractive person. I am not sure exactly which personal traits were being appraised, but it was painful for me to observe the vanity of this bunch of young ego-centric upstarts, so under the impression of their own beauty, yet so badly lacking real character.
Is there any relationship between this TV program and Attraction Marketing? You bet! In marketing, as on TV, you cannot consistently keep up a facade. You cannot exude qualities that you dont have. Oh sure, you can fake it till you make it (very easy on the web). However, sooner or later, the cracks will shine through the veneer.
For me, 'Authentic Marketing' works better than Attraction Marketing. Yes, if there is anything attractive about you, people will be drawn to you. Still, you should be authentic; i.e. you should project your true self in the first place. Do not fake it!
Here are a few things that you, as an Internet Marketer, can do to attract people to you:
- First and foremost, be your authentic self. Do not pretend to be what you are not. Exhibit your good qualities, work hard on your shortcomings.
- Be unique in terms of the way you portray yourself on the Internet. Nobody finds a imitation 'cookie-cutter' appearance appealing.
- Believe in yourself. Others can sense that (or, conversely, the absence thereof).
- Be visible! On the Web that is very easy with present-day social media such as Twitter, Facebook and YouTube. If you did a Google search on your own name; how many of the listings on the first ten pages would be yours?
- Work frantically at improving your marketing skills. Choose a marketing tool such as PPC or video and become an expert on it. The better your skill-set, the better your level of self-esteem will be. With the massive amount of information and training available on the Internet, this is almost the smallest hurdle.
- Help other marketers where you can. Give, give, give, without expecting anything in return. It will eventually come back to you. Thats the way the Universe operates. And dont underestimate your knowledge. In August 2009 there was an estimated one-point-six billion Internet users. If your marketing skills are average, it means that you know more than about 843,000,000 other Internet users!
If you view what I said here in a dating context, it will all make sense. Now go and do something about it!
