Since the concept of Attraction Marketing became popular through the writings of Mike Dillard, Ann Sieg and others, every second Internet marketer seems to be jumping on the Im attractive bandwagon. Sadly, it often seems very contrived. This made me think about a recent television series.
I am not a great TV fan, since I view it as an electronic revenue reducer. However, following my wife's advice, I did watch the reality series 'True Beauty'. In this series a group of youngsters compete for the title of 'most attractive person'. I am not sure exactly which personal attributes were being judged, but it was painful for me to watch the hollowness of this group of juvenile ego-centric upstarts, so under the impression of their own beauty, yet so devoid of real character.
So does this television program have a bearing on Attraction Marketing? You bet! In marketing, as on TV, you cannot consistently keep up a pretense. You cannot radiate qualities that you dont have. Sure, you can fake it till you make it (very easy on the web). But, sooner or later, the cracks will shine through the veneer.
I prefer the concept of 'Authentic Marketing' to that of Attraction Marketing. Yes, if there is anything attractive about you, people will be drawn to you. However, you should be authentic; i.e. you should project your true self in the first place. Do not fake it!
Here are a few things that you, as an Internet Marketer, can do to attract people to you:
- Always be your authentic self. Do not pretend to be what you are not. Exhibit your good attributes, work hard at improving the areas where you fall short.
- Be unique in terms of the way you portray yourself on the Internet. Nobody finds a imitation 'cookie-cutter' appearance appealing.
- Believe in yourself. Others can sense that (or, conversely, the lack thereof).
- Be seen! On the Web that is very easy with present-day social media such as Twitter, Facebook and YouTube. If you did a Google search on your own name; how many of the listings on the first ten pages would be yours?
- Work frantically at developing your marketing skills. Decide what you like, or can afford, be that PPC or video marketing or whatever, and become an expert in that area. The better your skills, the better your self-confidence will be. With the gigantic amount of information and training available on the Web, this is almost the smallest hurdle.
- Assist other online marketers wherever you can. Give, give, give, without expecting anything in return. It will eventually come back to you. That is the way the Universe operates. And dont underestimate your knowledge. On 28 August 2009 there were an estimated 1,668,870,408 Internet users. Even if you are an average marketer, you know more than eight-hundred million other Internet users!
If you view what I said here in a dating context, it will all make sense. Now go and do something about it!
