Diuretic drug is a type of drug which is used in elevating the rate of urination and thus provides a means of forced dieresis. There are several categories of diuretics. Every kind of diuretic increases the excretion of water from bodies, although each class does so in a distinct way.
Diuretic drugs are mostly used for the kidney failure. These drugs can be used for many other purposes such as high blood pressure, liver cirrhosis or eating disorder, hyper tension, heart failure. Some Diuretics, such as acetazolamide, help to make the urine more alkaline and are helpful in increasing excretion of substances such as aspirin in case of overdose or poisoning. Diuretic drugs are usually used by the sufferer of eating disorders, especially bulimics, in attempt a weight loss.
Anti hypertensive action of some diuretics ( thiazides and loop diuretics in popular) are independent of diuretic effect. That is, the reduction in blood pressure is not due to decreased blood volume resulting from increased urine production, but across through other mechanism and at lower doses then that required to produce diuresis. Indapamide was specially designed with this in mind and has a larger therapeutic window for hypertension, then most other diuretics.
There are five categories of diuretic drugs: high ceiling diuretic drug, thiazides, potassium sparing diuretic drug, aldactone or spiractin, amiloride or triamterene, osmotic diuretic drug and low ceiling diuretic drugs.
