It is a mystery to me how anyone going to school even at a community college level can actually afford the cost of going to college. The cost of tuition can be in the thousands of dollars. This does not count the thousands of dollars which will pay per class, especially at the upper levels.
You also have to pay for the cost of books and this is not counting your cost of living if you have to move to the University of your choice. The Obama administration has made it possible for single moms and others to go back to school through an increase in financial aid courtesy of the stimulus package.
How it works is that you must have a need. If you're just starting college out of high school, you can apply for the Pell Grant. This will give you about $5000 to work with per semester so that you can pay for your college tuition, cost of books, and custom classes with very little or no out-of-pocket expense to you.
Single moms can also apply for this as well as qualify for the moms for back-to-school program created by President Obama. This fund allocates about $12 billion for people returning to school with single moms at the top of the list.
Single mothers with children are probably the most difficult case in regard to being able to find the time and energy to return to school. Imagine taking care of a family on your own and working a full-time job and then going back to college. Sometimes college classes can take up 12 or 14 hours of your day is catching up with homework or preparing for a test. These fine women will go the extra mile to earn that degree so that they can provide a better life for their family based upon the new career the table have available to them because of the degree that they will earn.
Take some time today to figure out which major you want to go for. Those that have college degrees are going to be better off than those that do not. Unless you have a special skill that makes you useful for a high and paying job, your best bet is to get a college degree and use this as a stepping stone toward landing the job of your dreams.
