Making the decision to own your own business can be both daunting and exciting. You realize that so many factors will determine its success or failure. If you've already chosen a business type that fits your strengths and interests, there's one other choice you may consider - buying a franchise.

There are many positive reasons for a first-time business buyer to consider buying a franchise. Primarily, the business will be under the guidance of a well established and successful corporation - one that has triumphed over the pitfalls that a new business often experiences. Here are just five good reasons to consider a franchise.

1. Investment - Your investment may be less risky since association is with a recognized name. Merchandise or services associated with the franchise are well known and trusted. Therefore, the neighborhood may be anxiously awaiting your arrival, and you won't have that slow crawl to gaining customer awareness and loyalty.

2. Training and Support - This alone is invaluable for a first-time business owner. Franchisors want their franchisees to be successful. You will have at your disposal all the best practices, tried and tested before, to help ensure your success.

3. Advertising - It's not uncommon to pay into an advertising fund. This money is used on a national scale in newspapers, magazines, radio, television, and the internet. Your business would be promoted at a level that would otherwise put a tremendous burden on the advertising budget of a privately owned business. Without quality advertising, any business can struggle to maintain a stronghold in the marketplace.

4. Controls - The franchisor may have the final word on location and appearance standards. An analysis would be done to determine the number of customers who are likely to frequent the business in a certain area. A review of existing businesses in the same shopping district or mall, for example, would be done. Nearby businesses can have a high impact on drawing in certain demographics who could become your loyal customers as well. Appearance is crucial. Customers have high standards. If your business falls short on overall appearance, layout, displays, etc. customers will be frustrated and turned off. The franchisor will ensure that all of these factors are in place. Although these things can add to your costs, they also add to the likelihood of the success of your business.

5. Goods and Services - Standards have been set, and customers have come to recognize the style and quality of the goods or services that a franchise offers. If these characteristics are not typical for the franchise, the customer could end up disappointed, and they may move on to another provider.

Admittedly, there is a relinquishing of some freedom. However, the scale of market research, advertising, support, and control that the franchise provides ensures these good practices pay off in the end. Do your research carefully, and make sure the franchise is one with which you can envision compatibility.
