Just to refresh your memory, twitter is a social networking site that can be used for both personal and business purposes. The risk of sharing potentially embarrassing information through twittering (carried out by twits, as some wags might add) is limited by the 140 characters each tweeter is allowed.

If you tweet to keep in touch with friends and family, then you might not be too concerned with the number of followers you have. However, if you're starting up a business, having a large number of followers can be beneficial to your enterprise. Some people crack their heads over how to boost twitter followers while others seem to collect them without even trying. Life's not fair.

Birds of a feather flock together. Find and join groups with an interest that is relevant to you. Common ground is easily found when it comes to blogs, current political situations or even a particularly saucy video of a celebrity du jour that is making the rounds on the web. Such interaction paves the way for reciprocal following.

You know how you wish you're the guy who's the life at any party he attends? You wonder how he does it as you stand alone and ignored in the corner. Simple as it sounds; gaining a large following on twitter is sometimes as simple as posting fresh, interesting content. This could come in the form of good links, fresh media and, especially, original content. No one's interested that you had lunch, but what if Robert de Niro, or someone who looked a lot like him, spilled his drink on you at the time?

Learn to participate. Your tweets are interesting, all your friends tell you that, but you don't have as many followers as you'd like. A tweeter has to make himself heard. Join groups or discussions relevant to your interests. Share your unsolicited opinion (but don't be obnoxious) and answer questions that come your way as well as you're able to. Making yourself visible is essential if you're looking for more followers. After all, how is anyone going to follow you if they don't know you're there in the first place?

You can't afford to sit back and relax after you've gained all those nice followers either. Oh no, the hard has just begun for you. Now, you'll have to work to keep your audience interested!
