In part one of this series, I noted that “awakening your leadership potential” is all about deploying and leading in your area of talents. I also noted that if you discover your talents and deploy it, then you are a leader in that field. In this part two, we will be looking at what makes a leader tick and formidable. We shall be looking at some essential qualities of leaders, who have found their talents, and then turned them into profit.

Quality leaders are prepared in the wilderness – a period of severe adversity. Check any successful leader in any field, they have one thing in common, and that is, they can always point back to their wilderness experience as part of their journey to greatness. It is at this time that your motives get purified, your backbone solidifies, and your calling in life gets clarified.

Below are 25 great qualities and attributes of leaders who have found their field, a place where their God-given talents and gifts are deployed.

 They are change agents who defile the norm and always transform the traditional paradigm.

 They have inspiring vision. They understand that their vision is their future. Therefore, they strive to see ahead for a better future.

 They are problem solvers because they have what the people need. They understand that their talents are meant to meet the needs of others.

 They are motivated by a love for people and a desire to serve. The people come first in their philosophy of life.

 They move where their cause is celebrated instead of tolerated. In other words, they focused on their strength rather than their weaknesses.

 The greater the leader in his field, the greater the humility and sacrifice they display. They understand that a gift may take a leader to the top, but humility enables him to endure.

 They possess strong character. They understand that competency cannot substitute for lack of character.

 They are on a mission and never drift from it. They get consumed and obsessed with their God-given assignment here on earth.

 They are diligent and never slothful in their work. They know that laziness can steal everything a leader has worked to achieve.

 They are unique and have the ability to see farther and broader and bigger than just ordinary people.

 They lead from the inside out. In other words, they first lead themselves before leading others.

 They invest heavily in themselves through personal development. They go for anything that will enhance their personal value in their field of call.

 They are very courageous and never afraid to confront great hazards. I call them “boat jumpers” because they are risk takers. They know that one leader with courage is majority.

 They are proactive, not reactive in their place of leadership. Proactive leaders in their field are creators not detractors.

 They have core values, beliefs and governing principles that guild them. Leaders who compromise their values eventually compromise their goals.

 They leave great legacy behind for the generation unborn: they provide for the future, even when they don’t get to experience it.

 They compromise on their methods, but never on their convictions or principles.

 They are never indecisive: they make firm decision and give clear and specific direction.

 They buy the principle that says “success without a successor is a failure.” They raise others to continue from where they stop.

 They understand the power of mentorship. Every leader needs a mentor. They acknowledge their limitations and seek for wise counsel.

 They soar through adversity. They see every challenge or circumstance as a stepping stone to greatness. They seek to understand before they seek to be understood. They imbibe the principle of giving room to others to air their views.

 They know what they stand for and what they won’t stand for. They understand that if they don’t stand for anything, they will fall for anything.

 They are not moved by what they see. They are moved by the spiritual, for the spiritual realm controls the physical realm.

 They have fear of God and take refuge in Him. They recognize that all the gifts and talents they have comes from above.

Leading in your area of talent requires that you exhibit the above qualities of a leader. Right now, begin to look inward and start asking yourself: what is it that I’m capable of doing? What will you be if you be anything in the world? I implore you today to do the following exercises I’m about to give you now:

1. What is your PASSION?
2. Describe five things about yourself
3. What do you like about yourself?
4. Write down something in your personal history/background that is a source of pride to you.
5. What is one thing that you enjoy doing most?
6. How would you like to be remembered?
