Choosing the right daycare center can seem like a vexing task. Of course you want only the best care and supervision for your young loved ones. It might be difficult to leave the care of your children to someone else. And while you should be careful about who to trust with your kids, there are things to keep in mind while choosing a daycare that can make the process much less difficult.

• Find online reviews of the daycare you're considering. Other parents and supervisors have probably already written feedback that can be helpful in informing your choice.
• Most states offer feedback rating systems for daycares. If the daycare you're interested in using doesn't have a rating, be sure to ask them why.
• Talk to parents who use the daycare already. Meet them at the daycare or strike up a conversation as they are dropping off or picking up their child. What is their experience with the daycare?

• Mind the ratio of caregivers to children. How many children is each caregiver responsible for? Are there more caregivers for every infant?
• Tour the facility. Take careful notice of cleanliness, order, and the demeanor of the staff. I recommend you drop by the facility at an unscheduled time. This will give you a true look at how the daycare operates when they aren't preparing for a scheduled open house.
• Ask what your child will be doing. Make sure they will be receiving educational and enriching input. Will they be spending enough time outside, or will they be allowed to sit in front of a video game system?
• Ask about fees and hours right away. This way you won't be surprised by a high cost daycare once you've already decided it's the best choice. Make sure the daycare is clear about fees when your child is sick or out of town.

• Who does the daycare allow to pick up the child? Will you be able to have someone else retrieve your loved one under special circumstances?

While you should be careful when choosing a daycare facility, the process shouldn't cause anxiety. Remember these important questions and seek a daycare directory where you can find more local daycares and agencies that will look after your child.
