The Modern Language Association citation style or simply known as the Modern Language Style is one of the most common methods of paper formatting that is used by students and scholars pursuing their diplomas and degree. It is used specifically in the liberal arts and humanities with the field most commonly associated with the style being psychology.
There are some basic rules that apply in the compiling of academic research term papers and reports. These include having a title, an introduction, the methodology, the result and findings with in-text citations and the reference and bibliography pages. But that alone does not entitle you to a good grade with MLA format since there are some details missed by that general guide. The first thing in writing a good MLA paper is pagination. That is you should write your last name and page number as a header and flash it to the right hand corner of your paper. These two details should appear all through the paper with the page number not being constant as usual.
One of the most important pages as with other styles is the bibliography page. This is the page where all the ´credits´ are given. That is, all the sources of information are written down alphabetically. The name of the author is included, the date of publication, year of publication and the house responsible for the publication. The page number should also be indicated as well. Sometimes cramming all these does not help since the chances are you will forget one essential detail. That is why it is highly encouraged to use a format paper that has all the details that you are supposed to follow. It at least makes sure that you are on the right track and you follow the format as it is supposed to be. There are many points where students usually get confused and one of them is in the writing of a title for an MLA paper.
To be in a better position to understand how to format the titles, you need to address each title on its own. The most important one is the topic title for the paper. It usually appears in the first page. It should be in capital letters and centered. Don´t justify. It is assumed at this point that the knowledge of the font used is well understood. It is Time New Roman and the font size is 12. This remains constant throughout the paper and italics are only employed during citations. First level headings should be flushed left and written in capital letters as well. Second level headings also known as paragraph headings should be indented and should use normal sentence caps. These should not be in upper case letters. The third level headings are those that appear as numbers before paragraphs and the like. They should simply be indented and without caps. That is the most basic of descriptions on how to write the titles and the MLA citation style format. With enough practice it should not be too hard.
