A common appeal to common people.
We've all seen it: work-at-home ads that
tout working in underwear as somehow
being appealing to those wishing to operate
a business from home.
Well, I don't know about you, but working
in my underwear just wouldn't cut it for me.
First of all, I don't feel revved up and ready
for action until I am fully dressed and prepared to
put my best foot forward, whether I'm sitting at
my kitchen table or at a conference table somewhere.
How could anyone possibly feel professional and
serious about conducting business in his
underwear? To me, it presents a picture of, not
only a slovenly body, but a slovenly mind.
Remember that old English comedy, "Keeping Up
Appearances"? If you do, you'll also recall the
"Onslow" character, whose perpetual garb was an
undershirt, wherever he was, unshaven and unkempt-a
real "winner"! How could anyone possibly feel good
about himself and present such an appearance? It's
certainly beyond my comprehension!
To be sure, if you conduct business from home,
occasionally you will be answering the telephone
before you are dressed for the day (or sometimes
after you have undressed for the day!), and there
certainly is nothing wrong with that. However,
that shouldn't be considered a license to regularly
call on prospects or even work at the computer
before you are showered and dressed!
For one thing, it doesn't conjure up a picture of
success in your own mind-or in the mind of
anyone else who may be around. How can you
expect your family to take your business endeavors
seriously if you don't project a business-like appearance?
And there's always the chance that someone will knock
at your door unexpectedly and catch you with your
pants down, so to speak-what then? Wouldn't that
surprise caller get a lovely impression of you,
especially if that person didn't know you?
Don't misunderstand ... you don't need to dress up,
but you do need to be clean, neat, well groomed,
and presentable enough to leave the house at a
moment's notice, the same as if you were planning
to go out and about. Jeans and casual clothes are
fine, but please, let's keep the underwear where it
belongs-out of sight!
