Are You *Driven* To Work From Home?
Written by Barb Niehaus

Having worked from my home office since becoming
pregnant with my first baby, a natural assumption is
that I chose to work at home strictly for my children.
While there's no doubt, my family is my top priority
and number one reason that I do telecommute, there is
so much more that drives me. And if you ask the millions
of women with home businesses and teleworking positions why
they chose this career path, I doubt if they could pinpoint their
choice to one specific reason.

Family..Clearly we moms (and dads) telecommute for the
ability to be a *hands on* parent while still providing an income.
No longer do we have to worry about missing a day's work and

pay when a child is sick. We are available to volunteer for and
attend daytime school functions. We no longer have to concern
ourselves with child care provisions for the long summer break.

Being our own boss...I was never a very good *fit* with the
corporate world. Having traveled to the beat of a different drum
my entire life, a set schedule or supervisors peering
over my shoulder didn't agree with me. I've always been more
of a spontaneous person that doesn't choose to have eight hours
of my day dictated by company policies and worst yet, politics.
If it's a gorgeous Spring day, I grab my laptop and work in the park
or on my deck with my dogs sunning next to me. An invitation to
breakfast
or lunch with a friend fits just fine into *my* schedule.

Making a place for ourselves...Yes, it's the 21st century, and while
we
women have made tremendous strides in the workplace, we still
have a long way to go to catch our male counterparts. Many women
are starting home businesses and finding great success along the
way. Being the owner, the CEO and the Board all wrapped into one
gives us our chance to shine and showcase our talents that might
otherwise be hidden in the office setting.

Income....Working from home for many is defined by a part-time
business or freelancing on a small scale but...for just as many
women, working from home provides the opportuntity for unequaled
income than in the traditional workplace. We set our own goals
and there is no *glass ceiling* to beware of. The sky's the limit!
