Verizon DSL (digital subscriber line) is a high speed internet service offered by Verizon Communications. The way it works is that users can use their telephone while connected to the internet on the same telephone line. The also offer the Unbundled Network Element Platform (UNE-P) which is their DSL service through a 3rd party or Dry Loop, also known as Naked DSL, which is Verizon DSL Service without a telephone requirement. It is becoming more popular as VoIP is going mainstream as well as most people just having one telephone which is their cell phone, eliminating the need for a land line.
Verizon Online DSL uses two different systems for East and West coast customers. PPPoE is used for the east coast customers requiring them to use a user name and password, while DHCP is used for west coast customers who do not need a user name or password. Bell Atlantic and Nynex formerly served the east coast while GTE was the former provider for the west coast. Since GTE is retained by Verizon, the west coast customers do not need a special login compared to the east coast customers who were brought over from Bell Atlantic and Nynex.
