Long-term stress and the use of Essential Fatty Acids,
Ginkgo Biloba and Garlic

by Stephan Van Der Lingen

Long-term stress may be the number one threat to our health
and well-being.

Stress is the physiological, psychological, emotional and
behavioural response of a person seeking to adjust to
internal and external pressures and demands.

Long-term stress can lead to a multitude of chronic
diseases and it can cause damage in areas in our brain that
contribute to cognitive and emotional functioning (burnout?).

Some of the stress induced diseases are the following:

- Heart disease, i.e. heart attack, high blood pressure,
arteriosclerosis, thrombosis etc.

- Diseases of the muscular-skeletal system, i.e. arthritis.

- Diseases of the reproductive system, i.e. impotence, lowered
libido, etc.

- It may also lead to conditions associated with chronic
fatigue, obesity, diabetes type 2 and insulin resistance,
skin disorders, digestive disorders, immune system
disorder, depression and insomnia.

Herewith three very valuable nutritional products to
address some of the effects of the above mentioned stress
induced problems.

1. Essential fatty Acids

The human body do need the "Essential Fatty Acids" and a
minimum intake is required for optimal health and
well-being. Essential implies that the body cannot produce
the specific fatty acids. We have to take them through food
or nutritional supplements.

The "Essential Fatty Acids" is beneficial in addressing problems
associated with more than 60 health conditions.

The Essential fatty Acid can be obtained from sources such
as cold-water salmon oil, sardines, pilchards, evening
primrose oil and starflower oil. Even Soya Beans!

The only dietary requirements are the key essential fatty acids,
linolenic (omega-3) and (omega-6) linoleic acids.

We need omega-3 to omega-6 in the ratio 2:1.

Eat fish. Go and get a can of pilchards in tomato sauce.

2. Gingko Biloba (Herb)

The leaves and nuts of the Gingko Biloba tree are used as
as a herbal remedy.

The bioflavonoids in Ginkgo Biloba are responsible for its
potent anti-oxidant activity in the brain, cardiovascular
and immune system.

Gingko Biloba has a unique capability to improve mental
function and peripheral blood flow to the extremities.
This increases the blood flow to the brain and
extremities ensuring that the tissues get more oxygen and
nutrients. This provide for improved memory and
concentration capability. Gingko Biloba protects the myelin
sheaths around the nerve fibres and thereby ensures more
efficient transfer of messages along the central and peripheral
nervous system and is also used to address problems
associated with diabetes type 2, i.e. Neuropathy.

Use Gingko Biloba in medicinal amounts only in consultation
with a healthcare professional.

3. Garlic (Allium Sativum)

Garlic (Allium Sativum) can be used as a food supplement to
address effects associated with the following, i.e.

- Reduction of high levels of the of LDL (Low Density Lipids)
Cholesterol,

- Cardiovascular effects associated with blood lipids (fats)
(Cholesterol),

- Hypertension (High blood pressure),

- Blood clotting abnormalities and flow,

- Arteriosclerosis,

- High blood sugar levels/diabetes and

- Treatment of infections, it is a natural "antibiotic", i.e.
support of the immune system.
