Squirrels are a kind of rodent that we commonly see moving around our neighborhood or parks. This is because they choose to live in trees and eat up the vegetation around the area. When you are asked, “What does a squirrel eat” the first answer that usually comes into your mind are nuts.

While this is a safe and correct answer it is not the only food that they consume. In fact there are particular times in the year when they do not have admission to these and must search for other items.

Squirrels cannot digest any kind of food that contains cellulose. They need to stick with foods with large measures of protein, fat, and carbs so that they remain full and healthy. When they live in temperate areas around the spring they cannot get nuts because they are entombed deep in the ground.

Rather they will consume the buds that are on the trees. Yet, during the summer and fall months they will eat up nuts, fruits, seeds, conifer cones, fungi, and green vegetation. Very few kinds of squirrels can really eat meat. This meat comes from from smaller rodents, insects, baby snakes, small birds, and eggs.

The majority of these are diurnal. This means that they sleep during the night and are most active during the daylight hours. One of the few types of squirrels is nocturnal and this is the notorious flying squirrel. Contrary to popular belief this squirrel does not have the ability to fly - but uses its long muscles to jump and glide far lengths.
