If there is one television show that comes to mind when people talk about lawyers and the legal process it is probably “Law and Order” (or one of its spin-offs and variants). This gives viewers a glimpse of the many public figures operating in the world of the urban judicial and legal system, but is it an accurate view of life as a modern lawyer? It is if someone wants to understand police procedure.
If, on the other hand, someone is looking for the inner-workings of private practices they can turn to shows like “L.A. Law,” “Civil Wars,” “Shark,” or even “Judging Amy.” Those hoping for courtroom-based legal wrangling can turn to such popular programs as Rumpole of the Bailey, the classic “Perry Mason” program starring Raymond Burr, and the second half of any episode of the original Law and Order franchise.
The thing to remember about almost any legal drama is that while it offers an entertaining take on the legal system, it is also meant to be compelling. This means that none of the television programs (not those based on reality anyway) are going to be heavy on the day to day details of a lawyer’s life or the somewhat drama-free moments of a standard legal practice.
It is interesting to note that one of the common themes of the fictional shows following lawyers and their work is the conflicts that many face when dealing with guilty parties. While some are depicted as detached from the fact that they just set a rapist lose on the streets, others are shown switching sides, taking pay cuts, and generally wiping the slate clean in order to live with a clear conscious.
There are also many modern reality programs that follow law enforcement professionals through their pursuit of criminals, and while these too will demonstrate the legal issues that they must deal with--including the evidence necessary for a search warrant and the proper way to handle witnesses--they don’t offer more than a passing glance at the world of the lawyer and the modern system for justice.
