The over the top golf swing is where the golfer takes the club back too much on the inside swing plane. Almost a scythe swing pattern, sideways in its arc, rather than taking the club back on a straighter and more upright swing arc. The cause of it is an incorrect setup. Often golfers who play the over the top swing start with a closed stance, at the same time the shoulders are open.
The result of swinging the club in this way, is that there is an over compensation at the top of the swing. The club head is thrown away from the player on to the outside swing path, and the outside to in swing arc produces either a pulled shot, to the left, or the banana slice which starts left then arcs to the right.
It is a brutally destructive shot, and will land you in all kinds of trouble on the golf course.
Curing the over the top golf swing is done as follows:
1. Check the golf fundamentals, starting with the grip, which should neither be too weak or too strong.
2. Stand square to the target, paying particular attention to the feet and shoulders, which should both be square.
3. Begin the back swing by taking the club back straight, and as you do so, think of hitting the shot from the inside. Just having this thought can help you to hit the ball properly.
4. Start the downswing by transferring the weight on to the left side, while at the same time delaying un cocking the wrists, so as to inject as much club head speed into the shot as you can.
