When you have decided to go to college, there are many mistakes that you can make when you are first attempting to obtain college aid to go to school. During this very stressful time, whether you are a new student going to college for your first time, or a single mom going to college and still taking care of your family, the stress you are under can cause you to make mistakes. Here are a few things that you can do to make sure your financial aid for college goes through smoothly.

The worst error that any college student can make when they are first starting out, or if they have not been to college for decades, is to wait until the last minute. Prior to graduating from high school in the month of February, this is the last possible minute that you want to wait to apply for financial aid. Do all of this prior to February, at the latest January, and get it done. This put you on top of the list to receive the College aid that you will need to get your classes and pay for your tuition.

Next, when you are filling out your FAFSA, you need to make sure everything is done correctly. And when you are filling it out online, make sure that you are saving your information. There are at least 10 to 15 sections to this document. If your computer goes out, or your Internet connection fails, you may lose all of your information.

Consider all deadlines. This means that applying for financial aid is not the only deadline you need to be concerned with. If you do not meet deadlines involved with paperwork that needs to be turned into your college, you may not get any classes or at least the classes that you want. Of course the first year of college is always the most difficult in regard to competition for classes. But if you wait until the last minute, you will more than likely have to spend an extra year in college just to catch up getting the classes that you need.

The bottom line is that anyone who wants to go to college needs to be prepared. You need to have a goal set in mind that states what you want to accomplish, and how you're going to accomplish it. This means you need a timeline, and a fact sheet which shows you exactly what you need to accomplish on a daily and weekly basis.

Single moms have more excuses than single students that are going to college. They have an entire family to take care of. The single student has no one but themselves. Take the time to make sure you have visualized and written out what it is you want to accomplish to avoid making tragic errors that may keep you from getting the classes that you need in the College aid that will pay for your degree.
