Breastfeeding is one of the main concerns for any mother. Especially with work schedules and the baby’s day to day activities, sticking to a proper breastfeeding regime may be tough. Doctors all over the world vouch for the benefits that breastfeeding has for the mother and child. It helps immensely for the baby’s immunity as well.

• Some babies take to breastfeeding with ease while some need a little coaxing. Whatever the scenario may be never panic. It’s important that the mother and baby bind and get to know each other. This may sound strange but babies that bond well and get used to their mother’s body and warmth will have fewer problems with breast feeding.

• As far as possible, try avoiding artificial nipples and sleep with the baby in the same room in the beginning. This way you get used to the baby and the baby gets used to your presence and breathing.

• Place the baby at your breast without much of a time gap after the birth. If it’s a normal delivery some doctors will allow nursing right in the delivery room.

• As you know all mothers and children get accustomed to the same sleep pattern and rhythm. When it’s feeding time after a few days the mother will wake up automatically. Crying is not the only sign of hunger for a baby. The baby may get fidgety, start stretching, wriggling and the baby’s breathing may also change.

• A baby who has been crying for some time before being tried on the breast may refuse to take the breast even if he is ravenous. Mothers and babies should be encouraged to sleep side by side in hospital. This is a great way for mothers to rest while the baby nurses. Breastfeeding can be relaxing, not tiring.

• Breastfeed the baby for as long as they want. You should ideally feed a new born baby 12 times a day. Some feedings maybe just for a few minutes while some last an hour. If the baby is crying don’t feed her then and there. Calm her down and try again. The baby will not latch on well and may also choke if she is agitated.

• Always be in a comfortable position while breastfeeding. Support your back and arms and have a rest under your feet to avoid any body aches and pains later. Take the baby close to you and make sure his head is not arched too much and he can reach the breast with ease. Don’t let your breast touch the baby’s chin.

You’ll learn with your baby how to breastfeed. Don’t be apprehensive; you just have to trust your instincts and your baby! To learn more about breastfeeding or using a pregnancy calculator you can visit www.mumzone.com.au.
