Having some of the earliest institutes to be set for helping students get better exposure to the medical field, Chandigarh is a city that is host to a number of government medical colleges and hospitals.

The Government Medical College and Hospital Chandigarh was established in the year 1991. At the initial stage, the institute was granted provisional affiliation for the MBBS course by the Punjab University. The college gives the highest preference to quality and so admissions to the same are strictly on merit on the basis of the Combined Entrance Test conducted by the Punjab University. This is because its students are getting admissions to postgraduate courses at PGI, Chandigarh, AIIMS, New Delhi and through the All India Post Graduate Entrance Examination and also performing consistently very well at the interviews conducted by the Union Public Service Commission(UPSC), Armed Forces Medical Services(AFMS) and various state Public Service Commissions. Many students of this medical college also secured placements in the United States, with high percentile marks in the USMLE (United States Medical Licensing Examination) examination. The college has also been recognised for the MBBS degree by the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Govt. of India. The students, after completion of their courses, can obtain satisfying placements in any part of India.

The Government Medical College and Hospital Chandigarh is located in Chandigarh, Punjab, with a state-of-the-art infrastructure. The college has a well equipped library which has more than 7837 books and is subscribing 154 national and international journals and magazines to cater to the needs of the medical students and faculty. Besides, it provides more than 3520 bound journals. It has near about 250 well experienced teaching staff in the basic and clinical departments in addition to 70 junior residents for the smooth teaching. The faculty is highly qualified and are selected through their performance in PGI, Chandigarh, All India Institute of Medical Sciences(AIIMS), New Delhi, Directorate General of Health Services, New Delhi and the states of Punjab, Haryana, Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh.


Courses offered by the medical college:

The college provides the MBBS course to the students with a duration for five and a half years followed by internship of one year. This specialised programme provides excellent training to the young doctors to develop their skills and experience and in the long run, provide their polished services towards the welfare of the society.

Again, it provides MS(Orthopedics). This program focuses in Orthopedics and provides training to the doctors that how to diagnose and treat diseases related to bones and joints such as all kinds of cervical spondylosis, spinal cord injury, bone tumour, rheumatoid arthritis, congenital diseases related to bones and joints, complex limb fractures and fractures that do not get healed. MS offers excellent training in operating conditions like cervical spondylosis, scoliasis and displacement of artificial articulation.

Co- curricular activities:

The literary, cultural and sports societies of the college are very active and the students are highly encouraged to take participation in various inter college, zonal and national events. Chandigarh administration allows this prestigious Medical Colleges in India to use the facilities of Sports Stadium, Sector 46, Chandigarh for any type of sports activities of the college. The college has adequate hostel facility for both boys, girls and resident doctors separately. Interestingly, this facility is available within the main complex of the institute.
