The Demise Of Traditional Shoe Shops

There was a time when shoe shopping meant taking a trip to a local, physical store. But times have changed and an increasing number of us are looking to shop for footwear online. We believe that we can save money by making purchases on the internet and it seems that we're often right.

Things have certainly changed in relatively short period of time. It wasn't so long ago that people were suggesting that we'd never be tempted to buy some goods and services online, with clothing and accessories often being top of the list of suggestions. As well as worries about the security of our payment card details, there were concerns that we wouldn't be prepared to buy shoes without being able to try them on first.

Reading this, you may be reminded of the days when you did use traditional stores. You'd wander in and look at the selection of shoes on offer. There would usually only be one shoe of your size in each style. That meant that you'd have to ask a shop assistant to bring you the other shoe of the pair if you wanted to try them on.

Looking back, this seems like a strange way of doing things. Was there only one shoe on the shelf to deter people from stealing them? Or was it simply to keep that shop assistant in a job? Either way, it was an unusual way of doing things.

But many of us were happy to shop in this way. That may have been because we had so few alternatives. Once the internet became available in more offices and homes, we started to realise that we could get some cheaper deals by shopping online. Our eyes were opened to the fact that traditional stores often had higher prices.

Why should this be the case? The fact is that traditional stores will frequently have higher overheads. That's often because they have to pay high rents and also staff salaries. It's why they struggle to compete with internet retailers.

Yet many of us still do visit shoe shops. We often look at different styles of shoe, before making our purchases online. This helps to explain why so many traditional stores are now struggling.
