Scooters – a short introduction

Scooter is a lightweight motorcycle with limited-performance engine. Compared to full-size motorcycles, it has smaller wheels, reduced frame to facilitate boarding, and either a platform for the rider's feet or footrests integral with the bodywork. Another feature that makes the scooters look different from the conventional motorcycle is that the engines and drive systems are attached to the rear axle or placed under the seat. The first scooters for sale appeared in the early 20th century, but they became popular only after World War II when Vespa and Lambretta were introduced.

Advantages of scooters

Nowadays, scooters are popular because there are inexpensive to buy and maintain, they burn little fuel and are easy to park. They may be an ideal solution to commute, especially in those regions where the weather is nice most of the year. Another advantage is that licensing, registration, and insurance procedures are easier and less expensive than in case of cars. In most states the scooters’ riders have to abide the same regulations as motorcycles’ owners, regardless of how many cc's.

If you have are already convinced that you want to buy a scooter, you have to decide what type would suit you best. The main thing to take into account is the power it has. The maximum speed you can achieve with 50cc scooter is up to 40 mph. If you expect to ride faster, you should get a scooter with a bigger engine. The most popular makes are: Yamaha, Bashan, Lance, Lambretta, Kymco and Honda. If you want to buy a new scooter, it is best to visit the dealerships. If you don’t know where to find them, have a look at online classifieds to locate them in your neighborhood. Internet is also helpful if you are looking for used scooters for sale. The classifieds are easy to browse and compare, what helps to find a good bargain.
