Every parent would like to multiply their child's intelligence and give him a brilliant start in life. But little do parents realize that a simple exposure to music at an early age can do more than a number of techniques, in enhancing how easily and speedily their children absorb information.
The field of music psychology is an emerging one, but the research findings in the last ten years suggest a great promise for the field. We are discovering new ways of using music to enhance learning, intelligence, creativity and flow.
Studies have consistently shown that children who are music smart tend to have an overall increased IQ, for instance.
You will be amazed at how great your children will perform on IQ tests and in their school work. When your child learns to play a musical instrument, not only does he learn how to make tunes, but he also enhances other capabilities of his brain as well.
In a neurological research of 1997, it was shown that students who received piano lessons performed 34 percent higher on tests that measured proportional reasoning such as ratios, fractions, proportions and thinking in space and time. It has also been discovered from a profile of SAT and Achievement Test takers at the College board that high school music students scored higher on the math and verbal portion of the SAT compared to their peers.
In one study by Dr. Eugenia Costa-Giomi, it was also concluded that pattern recognition and mental representation scores improved significantly in students who were given a 3-year piano instruction.
The literature on the research on music and academic performance is vast. But the bottom line is that learning music can definitely improve your child's learning ability in all skill areas. I therefore recommend the following with respect to music training for your child.
• Buy a personal musical instrument for your child. This will serve as a strong motivation for learning
• Look for a competent teacher that can teach your child to play the piano or any other instrument
• Make a time-table that will not interrupt your child's school work
• Make sure you monitor his progress on an on-going basis. Encourage your child to teach you what he learns. This will reinforce the learning experience.
• Try to encourage a love for music in your children by listening to songs they like and the once they compose.
Make them realize how keen you are about their preferences by engaging them in discussions from time to time.
You will soon realize how speedily your child will absorb other skills. This is because music has a way of boosting creativity and focus. It creates a pattern in the brain that will make your child perform at peak levels.
