Most consumers know little about the differences between conventional, petroleum based oils and the newer synthetic oils on the market today. Often, the slight difference in price and pure reluctance for change keeps consumers from considering the benefits of using a synthetic or synthetic blend oil in their vehicles. Although slightly more expensive, synthetic and synthetic blend oils have many positive qualities the average consumer has never considered. At the same time, with gas prices fluctuating at the highest rates in history, everyone is looking for ways to make their gas mileage improve. What few people understand is just how much money they can save at the gas pump by paying slightly more to switch from traditional, petroleum based oils to the newer, synthetic alternatives.

There is a direct correlation between good engine performance and good fuel economy. This means that protecting your engine's performance over it's lifespan will both lengthen the life of that vehicle and allow it to continue to get the gas mileage suggested by it's manufacturer. Most vehicle's engine performance begins to decrease slowly with every mile that is driven, and after a certain number of miles, the manufacturer's suggested gas mileage is something that the consumer can never expect to see again. Some action must be taken in order to see the gas mileage improve, instead. There are a number of reasons for this occurrence. The vital, internal parts of a vehicle's engine are constantly subject to extreme conditions while being used. With temperatures reaching nearly 200 degrees and constant movements of rods, pistons, and shafts at rates of thousands of revolutions per second, friction causes the metals to wear over time. The oil that lubricates these parts is also subject to these conditions and breaks down over time. Hence, we find the reason for its replacement at regular intervals.

There are a number of ways to help gas mileage improve. The simplest is to replace the traditional, petroleum based oil in one's engine with synthetic oil. Synthetic oil is chemically engineered to withstand the intense conditions inside an engine better than traditional oils. It lasts longer and stays chemically stronger between regular oil changes. This helps the metal parts to wear less, sustaining engine performance over time. Also, petroleum based oils leave far more byproducts behind than the newer synthetic oils as they are broken down under the stresses of engine conditions. These byproducts form as deposits on the internal, metal parts causing them to wear faster and use more energy. They then use more fuel over time in order to operate at the same specifications.

The small amount of extra money spent when deciding to use the newer, chemically engineered, synthetic oil will be saved in the long run by spending much less money on fuel and engine repair over time. Seeing gas mileage improve will be enough to cover the cost alone with today's high gas prices. The money saved on less engine repair over the lifespan of the vehicle will just be a bonus.
