If there is one thing I had to think about before deciding to get a cat, it was if I was willing to clean a litter box everyday. The job really is not all that difficult, but the thought of being so close to animal waste is not appealing. Unless you do not mind a smelly house, this task just has to be done. If you wait too long to clean the box, your house obviously will assume a strong aroma. Also, your cat will take its business elsewhere, like to your carpet or shoes. Cats do not like to eliminate in a filthy box.
For daily cleaning, all you need is a litter scoop and a trash bag. If you feel the need, you can also use rubber gloves and a mask. If you use clumping litter, a slitted scoop is best because it will catch the clump and allow the loose litter to fall back into the box. If you use non-clumping litter, a scoop with no slits will be better for scooping out wet litter.
The entire contents of the box should be fully dumped and cleaned once a week if you use non-clumping litter, and once every 3-4 weeks if you use clumping litter. Simply discard the dirty litter into a large bag. Use your scoop to scrape off any litter that sticks to the bottom of the box. Using a mix of dish liquid and water, wipe out the box with an old rag. When it dries, refill the box two to three inches high with kitty litter and put the box back where it belongs.
This is one task I would rather not do. What if I didn't have to clean up after my cat everyday? That would be so nice. Wait a minute. Follow the link and you can forget about Cleaning the Litter Box as you know it ever again!
