A logo is a very powerful business tool. The term logo actually comes from the Greek word logotipos, and has far reaching implications for business success. There are a number of rules so to speak for creating an effective logo. Below are some tips that have been used by major corporations that have made their logo so impressionable that people can simply recall the logo from memory without actually seeing the logo.

Colors - Color has a large effect on logo design. Certain colors inspire different feelings and therefore should be used accordingly. Warm colors like red, yellow, and orange create a feeling of excitement and heat, while cool colors create feelings of weightlessness and relaxation. The logo should not be tied to the color as it can effect how well the logo is transferred across mediums.


Essential Elements - Text/Abbreviated Text. There are some essential elements for any logo, one being text, or an abbreviated text. The font type does not necessarily need to be unique as many major corporations have used the same font face but their logos appear nothing alike. Use the company name or an abbreviated version for the logo by taking the text and enhancing it with emblems or symbols. Take Google for instance; the two "oo's" has been instrumental in Google's brand recognition. In search results, Gooooooogle appears to show the vast amount of data Google has collected.

Image/Graphic - Text is not always necessary for a logo. A clever element that is the company name can suffice. For example, the Apple logo is simply an apple with a bite taken out of it. Even without the rainbow background, the apple is still easily recognized. The Red Cross is known for its graphical element, a red cross. For more abstract or less tangible company titles, the type of image or graphic used needs to be somewhat more creative.


Slogan - Two types of slogans. Logo experts recommend more than one type of slogan for a given company- one for branding that should accompany the logo and the overall success of the business, and the other for individual advertising campaigns, which are short term.
