When homeowners think about tackling repair projects around the house, there is often the tendency to think big. Instead of a more realistic attempt to put together a broken fixture, you might think about new lighting for the entire room. While the impulse is admirable, anyone who has tried to take on a major project without the proper time and preparation knows that some things should simply be left to experienced professionals. For anyone busy with work and obligations, it is recommended to take on jobs that might require just an afternoon of your time. Fixing cracked kitchen tiles is one such project. Once you have a damaged tile in your kitchen, it sticks out like a sore thumb. Here is how to solve the problem with a home improvement job that should only take up a few hours of your time.
1. Try a quick fix. There are some cases in which you may be able to get away with a simple touch-up, without getting your hands dirty at all. This opportunity will present itself if the tile has a hairline fracture, barely visible to anyone except those who see it on a regular basis (like you). All you need to do is visit your local paint store and get an accurate match for your tile’s color. Once the area has been cleaned, paint over the crack with a tiny brush. After the paint has dried, you may find yourself with one less eyesore around the house.
2. Begin the removal process. If there is no turning back for your tile, you’ll have to remove it and replace it in its entirety. Still, there is little reason to fret. You won’t have to cancel your plans. Start out by removing the tile. Using a hammer, smash the tile into pieces and take out all of the loose parts. It is recommended that you use something to dull the blow and absorb some of the shock (a rag would work fine).
3. Clean the area thoroughly. After the big pieces have been removed, grab a chisel and jar any remaining debris loose. Next, get at the adhesive which was holding your old tile in place. Make sure you have a completely clean square. Look around to the area as well, making sure to sweep and vacuum, as anything that might blow into your work space will cause major problems.
4. Install the new tile. Once your area is clean and you are ready to go, put down a layer of adhesive for the new tile. Spread the substance evenly and fix the tile into place. Be sure to follow the directions for drying times for the adhesive. Once you are sure it’s dry, you can work on the grout lines.
5. Close the deal. Once you have a dry area, fill the spaces with grout and you’ll be finished with your kitchen repair. A simple cleaning will leave the tiles looking like new.
