It is not very hard to be a leader. In fact if you observe leaders, you will find common characteristics across leaders in many areas. Leaders are not the most brilliant however being brilliant does not exclude you from being a leader. Leaders are not generally the best looking and are not always rich. So what are the characteristics you need to become a leader?
The number one quality in a leader is the ability to take risks. Risk taking is essential because, a leader usually starts something new -- he or she is a trailblazer.
The second quality in a leader is consistency. Sending a consistent message is very important to make sure people listen to you. People listen to you for a while before they adopt your principles. If you keep changing your principles, you will not have much of a following and you will not be a leader.
The third quality in being a leader is making sure you make decisions. Making decisions and sticking to them is a very important quality of a leader. Leaders make decisions based on available information. They do not procrastinate making a decision if they are aware that more information cannot be easily obtained. They stick to the decisions that they made and only change them when significant new information is available not because they rethought the situation. That makes them consistent.
Great leaders are superb communicators. They can motivate people and articulate extremely well. Most people love clear directions and enjoy working with people who are good communicators.
People skills are very important in becoming a great leader. Making people do what you want them to do is very difficult without strong people skills. Leaders delegate very well, so they must possess this skill.
