You have probably encountered an annoying and malicious set of programs that are more commonly known as ‘spyware’ if you use the Internet regularly. Spyware programs are capable of tracking Internet usage, collecting personal information, spawning ‘pop-up’ advertisements, and altering Internet browser settings. In general, spyware refers to the kinds of adware that are covertly installed onto your computer without your consent.

A computer’s performance can be severely affected by many spyware programs. They may even cause lock-ups and crashes. This is why you should use a spyware remover on a regular basis. This will help keep your computer working at its best. You can choose from a number of spyware removers available today.

I highly recommend ‘Spybot – Search and Destroy’, made by Patrick Kolla, and ‘Ad-Aware SE’ produced by Lavasoft. You can avail of these programs in their basic form for free. However, the more advanced forms of the programs are only available for a small fee. Nevertheless, the free versions can be effective in getting rid of the spyware that is infecting your computer.

A few years ago, Microsoft has jumped into the spyware remover business. It has released a free update for Windows XP, Windows 2003, and Windows 2000 called the ‘Windows AntiSpyware Beta’. It is still in its testing stage like all beta programs. Fortunately, is intended to be released as a free product for Window’s users sometime in the near future. The Microsoft spyware remover can detect and halt spyware as it is being installed. Other spyware removing programs are normally only able to catch spyware after it is already on your computer.

You also need to be wary when you are looking for a good spyware remover because many advertisements for spyware removing software are misleading. In fact, there are some phony programs that actually install spyware of their own if you use them. Avoid using any spyware remover that is advertised in a ‘pop-up’ ad. You should do some research before you use a spyware removing program. Take advantage of online communities and forums that discuss this protective type of software.

You should also realize that no single spyware remover is perfect. This means that you may find better success with some over others. Running more than one program to increase your chances of keeping your computer spyware free is good overall strategy. Run both Spybot and Ad-Aware at least once a week, and then install updates for these programs whenever they are available.
