Driving in India is difficult. The condition of Indian road traffic is deteriorating day-by-day. Heavy traffic jams and chaos roads have become a day-today problem. These are situations that every major Indian city has to face. Often, we all blame the traffic authorities in India for this situation but are we not responsible for this? If we think with an open mind, we will analyze that often we are also responsible for such unhealthy situations. The general public has to do a lot with the present situation. Most of the times people are aware of traffic rules but they are not responsible enough to obey these rules. These are just a few questions that we should ask ourselves if we really want to improve Indian road traffic.

According to a recent survey, the road traffic injuries are on an increase. Everyday around 1.2 million men, women, and children are injured or killed in road accidents. The death toll is on the higher side for the countries where pedestrians, motorcyclists and passengers are weak and vehicles lack the safety norms. India is also a part of this situation. Let us look at some facts related to Road traffic in India:

  • Not less than 1,275,000 persons are critically injured on the roads every year.
  • India accounts for about 10 percent of road accident fatalities worldwide.
  • There is a huge proportion of untrained drivers, which is continuously on the rise. A positive driving culture is lacking.

Our country is on the road of very fast development. But even today safety norms in India are lagging behind what is present all over the world. Traffic safety in India is still a major issue and needs to be dealt very carefully. However, we should remember that road safety in India should start from our homes. Be it traffic in Bangalore, Mumbai, Delhi or Chennai, people need to be more careful and responsible. Road rage problem in India is on the rise and this needs to be controlled.

Road safety is an emerging major social concern in the country. The statistics are mind boggling with an average mortality rate of 100,000 persons dying in road accidents. All of us need to remember that road safety should be a combined effort from all the sectors of the society. This includes both civilians and traffic authorities. We should try and promote road safety amongst other people by providing up-to-date and relevant information on traffic laws, safe driver behavior and techniques, road conditions, maintenance procedures and vehicle safety.
