I recently read an article by TJ Tierney on the iSnare website with quite a bit of interest. Tierney is a professional photographer who still believes that film cameras should be used especially when taking landscape images.

This made me think about my first digital camera. It was 1-megapixel Kodak that worked great for images that I would produce on a web site or use on eBay. But when it came down to printing that image to a high quality inkjet, needless to say it wasn't that great.

For several years 3.x-megapixel cameras became the hot commodity and most people (including myself) jumped on that bandwagon. The quality was better and I too would have agreed with Tierney that film cameras still offered a superior image in total.

I have had to opportunity to use an 8-megapixel digital camera and to be honest, when I took the memory card to one of the drug store devices that produce prints the final outcome was impressive. As a matter of fact, it had more clarity and color representation than any film camera I had used in the last several years.

With Kodak's announcement of the KODAK KAF-39000 Image Sensor that has a 39-megapixel rating, photographers are going to have to take a serious look at what digital cameras are going to offer consumers, professional or not. With a resolution of that magnitude we may see film cameras laid to rest.
