My name is Steve Hill and I was bought up on horse racing as my father was a massive fan of the sport. He would take me to the race meetings on most weekends and I soon started to get the buzz. As I became more of an adult I realised that there was also a more serious side to it, a side where people attempt to win money. This made me even more interested.
I asked my dad to teach me about things like the horses form and weight. I will always remember how excited he became around this time of the year as he got ready for Cheltenham. He would not take me with him to this festival until I was about fifteen, he made his excuses but in truth it was because he wanted to get drunk with his friends, looking back who can blame him?
Aged fifteen he finally agreed to take me and boy what a week it was. The atmosphere was incredible, the noise deafening. The Irish were there in mass numbers but all in good spirits. There were no fixed races at Cheltenham with all of the jockeys and horses giving it one hundred percent.
There is no horse racing festival like Cheltenham, if you have never been you are missing out in a big way.
