Display Devices

There are many different devices that are specifically designed to convert electrical currents into a physically visible signal. Below are listed several types and their functions.

Cathode Ray Tube- A cathode ray tube is an electrical device that has a glass envelope containing an electron source in the form of an electron gun and a fluorescent screen. The screen has both internal and external methods for deflecting and accelerating electrons. The result is the emission of light-in the form of an image-as electrons strike the fluorescent screen.

Liquid Crystal Display- Liquid Crystal Display, or LCD, is a very popular display device in portable electronic devices. LCDs are made of a flat device with many color and monochrome and color pixels, situated in front of a light source or reflector that projects an image when engaged. The LCD is a valued invention as it uses very little amounts of electric power to display an image.

Nixie Tube- A nixie tube is a glass tube that contains multiple cathodes and a wire mesh anode filled with neon, for the purpose of displaying letters and digits. The cathodes are shaped in the form of the required digits or characters. A similar version is the pixie tube. It uses a preformed stencil mask as opposed to shaped cathodes to display numerals.

Display devices are used and seen everyday in all types of activities from televisions to laptops, cell phones, and flashlights. Engineers and scientists continue working to develop more efficient and more functional versions of display devices, just as they work to advance other technologies.
