If you struggle with diabetes, Better health is a goal that's worth pursuing. There are many changes you can make to your life to enhance your health even though you have this condition.

If you want to enhance your health, create a special meal plan on a regular basis that's appropriate for diabetics.

Mealtimes can still be fulfilling even though you do have diabetes. Being vigilant about what you eat doesn't mean you'll have boring and unsatisfying meals.

As a diabetic there are some foods you need to avoid. With that in mind, here are eating suggestions for diabetics:


1. Avoid eating fatty foods.

For example, limit your fat intake by cooking with less of it. Don't use cooking oils such as coconut oil or palm oil or shortening. Why not use olive oil and flax seed oil and other low-fat oils instead of cooking with oils that are bad for you?

There are fats that are harmful and other fats that can actually be good for you. You'll want to avoid saturated fats as much as possible since they can detract from your health. Bad fats are harmful in several ways. Since they can cause your cholesterol level to rise to dangerous levels, heart trouble can result. Avoid eating poultry skins, butter, margarine and whole milk dairy products.

Avoid purchasing foods that are already packaged for you since they are usually high in bad fats.


You can easily cut back on bad fat by using skim milk instead of whole milk. You can easily reduce your daily fat intake by trimming away any fat you find on meat before you cook it.

2. Avoid eating foods that are high in cholesterol.

One of the main sources of cholesterol is animal products such as eggs and dairy products. For your health's sake, remember that foods from plants don't contain harmful cholesterol. That's why you should eat lots of vegetables and fruits plus cereals, grains, nuts and seeds.

3. Don't yield to the temptation of eating sugary foods and drinks.

Goodies such as cakes, cookies, pies, ice cream and soft drinks are loaded with sugar, so carefully watch the amount of these items that you include in your diet.


4. Since too much salt is harmful to diebetics, use as little of it as possible.

Prepackaged foods and processed meats usually have too much salt in them to be good for you, so walk past them when you go to the grocery store.

5. Diabetics should avoid eating large amounts of simple carbohydrates.

Simple carbohydrates are also known as simple sugars such as fruit sugar, table sugar and milk sugar. The foods just mentioned should either be completely avoided or eaten sparingly.

Now here's a list of foods that you should eat to be as healthy as possible:

1. Be sure to include a lot of foods that are high in fiber in your daily menu: vegetables, certain fruits and whole grains.

2. Be sure to include some protein in your diet such as skinless poultry, fish, nuts and cheese.

3. Include complex carbohydrates such as bread, pasta and rice in your menu.

To help keep your weight in check, invest in a food scale to weigh your food so you don't overeat. Another helpful suggestion is to be sure you don't skip meals or eat between meals either. Don't forget to exercise on a consistent basis to keep your weight down. Eating at the same time each day will help you develop healthy nutrition habits.

Plan your meals according to your actual schedule to help keep you on target with healthy eating. Eat smaller portions and chew your food thoroughly.

When it's time to shop for groceries, don't forget to check the food labels to avoid too much salt or sugar or other ingredients that aren't healthy.

Since your diet should be low in saturated fat and cholesterol, purchase cookbooks featuring recipes that are low in fat and high in fiber.
