Benefits of Working in a Small Company versus a Corporation

Big companies, or small, both have benefits and disadvantages. Big company may give you a false sense of security. In large companies when they have layoffs, seem to layoff large groups, not just one or two people.

The advantage of a big company is you can get lost in the crowd. You do your work, and then you are able to come home and that is it. Then on the other hand a disadvantage, is that being lost in the crowd, you will not get recognition if you are doing a job well done. In most cases the congratulations go through many mouths before ever getting to you and then is never said, usually people forget to thank a whole line of people when they are all directly involved in a project. Most go unnoticed!

An advantage to a small company is that you are noticed, but in that it’s a double edged sword, if you do well, or bad, they see it all. You may prefer to be your own boss and work in a small company where too you do your work and then go home. However these days working in a small company can require a lot of overtime, most without pay, due to staff reductions and layoffs.

In searching for a company to work for know what you want ahead of time. Do not be afraid to ask how many people they have on staff. In this, you will be able to decide if the number is too large, that maybe you want a smaller company to work for.
